Springtime has finally rolled around and is the perfect opportunity to not only do some spring cleaning- but a great time to do some general maintenance on your home as well. With hopefully some favorable weather in the forecast, you can get outside and start checking off tasks on your to-do list! And at First Cut General Contractors, we are ready to help you with any larger projects or renovations you may have planned for the year ahead.
Roof- During the winter, especially if you had heavy snowfall, your roof could have endured some damage. If you have shingles, this is a good time to also see if you have any shingles missing that need to be replaced. Check for pieces that are loose as well and replace them if possible.
Gutters- This is a great time to thoroughly clean out your gutters and examine them closely. There may be a large amount of buildup from the fall or pieces may be disconnected from freezing and thawing throughout the winter. Check for any leaks and make sure that the downspout is always leading the water away from the foundation of your home.
Air conditioner- If you didn’t get around to having your HVAC system serviced last year, now would be a great time to do so. If you have a swamp cooler or window setup, dust it off and get it ready to be installed!
Exterior- It’s easy for the exterior of your home to get cluttered with firewood and debris after the transition of seasons, so make sure to move leftover firewood out of the way for the warmer months ahead. Clean out dead plants and debris in your flower beds, gardens and areas surrounding the foundation of your home. It’s also a good idea to trim any overgrowth that might be blocking windows or putting pressure on your roof.
Equipment- Check the fluids and overall conditions of your equipment including lawn mowers, weed eaters, gardening tools and hoses. Any other mechanical tools that you have will also need to be checked after their long hiatus over the winter. Anything that needs to be fixed or repaired should get first priority so that you don’t delay any yard chores later on!
Paint- Take out the house or pressure washer and give the exterior of your home a good washing. Investigate your paint to see how it held up over the winter. If you have chipping or areas that need repair, make sure to give them fresh coat before moisture starts settling into the wood.
Foundation- One of the most important parts of a happy home is your foundation, so pay close attention to how it is settling over the years. Make sure the basement or crawlspace is not collecting any moisture in certain areas and always make sure all of your foundation vents are completely clear of debris. This ensures proper air circulation to prevent moisture damage to the integrity of the foundation.
As the weather continues to warm up and your property starts to come back to life, taking the time to inspect your home will help ensure that it lasts longer and is fully prepared for the rest of the year. At First Cut General Contractors, we believe in the value of giving love back to your home and would be happy to help you with any renovations or remodels you might want to tackle this year, big or small!
